Physical server-room maintenance: protecting the infrastructure beneath the cloud

Physical infrastructure remains essential for many business services. A server room needs the same deliberate maintenance as its operating systems, applications, and identity services.
Start with access and safety. Limit entry to authorized people, maintain an access record, label racks and power feeds clearly, and keep current diagrams available. Ensure that fire detection, emergency procedures, and environmental controls are appropriate for the room and regularly tested by qualified providers.
Monitor temperature, humidity, power, UPS health, and network connectivity. Review alerts for trends rather than waiting for thresholds to be breached. Inspect cable management, airflow, rack stability, dust accumulation, and spare hardware during planned maintenance windows.
Power work deserves extra discipline. Document A and B feeds, test failover where the design supports it, and never make assumptions about a cable or power distribution unit based only on its label. Coordinate changes with service owners and validate each affected system afterward.
A well-maintained server room is quiet, documented, secure, and predictable. That environment gives every service hosted there a better chance of staying available.
