A server patch-management checklist for predictable maintenance

A patch window should be a controlled service activity, not an unplanned interruption. Use this checklist to make each cycle repeatable.
1. Group servers by service criticality and establish a maintenance calendar.
2. Review vendor advisories, dependencies, disk capacity, backups, and change approvals.
3. Test updates in a representative non-production environment first.
4. Apply updates in rings, monitor health, and validate service functions after every stage.
5. Record versions, issues, rollback actions, and deferred patches with an owner and review date.
The result is a visible, auditable patch process that reduces both vulnerability exposure and operational surprises.
