Server-room audit checklist: power, cooling, access, and documentation

A server-room audit gives physical infrastructure the same level of attention as software and cloud services.
1. Verify authorized access, visitor records, rack labels, and current layout diagrams.
2. Check temperature, humidity, UPS alarms, battery-test records, and power-feed documentation.
3. Inspect airflow, cable management, rack stability, dust levels, and unused equipment.
4. Validate fire detection, emergency contacts, maintenance contracts, and environmental monitoring alerts.
5. Update the asset inventory and capture actions with a clear owner and due date.
Schedule the audit regularly and after substantial changes. The goal is a room that another qualified engineer can understand and operate safely.
