SSO integration checklist for SAML and OpenID Connect applications

Use this checklist before enabling single sign-on for a business application.
1. Confirm the application owner, data classification, user population, and support contact.
2. Choose the protocol supported by both parties: SAML or OpenID Connect.
3. Agree on identifiers, claims, group or role mappings, session duration, and logout behavior.
4. Test with a small non-production or pilot group, including first login, access removal, and error handling.
5. Document certificates, metadata locations, renewal dates, break-glass access, and rollback steps.
An SSO connection is successful when access is predictable for users and supportable for the teams that will own it after go-live.
