Zero Trust authentication: verify every access decision

Zero Trust authentication replaces the assumption that a network location is trustworthy with continuous verification. A user connected to an office network, a managed laptop, or a VPN still needs to prove the right identity and meet the right access conditions.
The practical foundation is strong identity. Use phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication for privileged accounts, enforce least-privilege role assignments, and separate daily accounts from administrative accounts. Pair those controls with device posture, sign-in risk, application sensitivity, and location signals where they are appropriate and lawful.
Microsoft Entra ID Conditional Access can apply these decisions consistently. Start with report-only policies to understand their impact, exclude carefully protected emergency access accounts, and keep every exception time-bound and reviewed. A policy that cannot be supported operationally will eventually be bypassed.
Zero Trust is not a product switch. It is a way of making access decisions explicit, observable, and proportionate to risk.
